Sep 9-15: World Snooker Shanghai Masters 2019

The greatest snooker players from around the world are back in town as world number one Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan bids to lift the Shanghai Masters trophy for the third year running. After becoming the richest invitation event in snooker history last year, expect arguably the most competitive field to date as the world’s top 16, plus eight players from China, fight it out for the prestigious trophy and for a share of the jaw-dropping RMB6 million plus prize fund.

Sep 10: Free Skate for Teachers’ Day

Sep 12: London Elektricity (Hospital Records)

Tony Colman is the co-founder and CEO of Hospital Records and sister label Med School, mastermind behind the multi award-winning Hospital podcast, producer and DJ, has been instrumental in the development of drum and bass as we know it today. Responsible for some of Hospital’s biggest anthems, such as ‘Billion Dollar Gravy’ and ‘Different Drum,’ London Elektricity has cultivated a first class reputation as both a producer and DJ and continues to push the genre he fell in love with in the mid 1990s.

Sep 12-15: Tank Art Festival

Taking place over four days at one of Shanghai’s newest exhibition spaces, Tank Art Festival will focus on a variety of different mediums, aiming to stimulate all the senses. With an art book fair, an affordable market, graffiti exhibition, an amateur art exhibition and so much more, there’s plenty for art lovers and the uninitiated alike to get involved with. Likewise, you can catch Adrian Vera Rojas stunning installation work, which, from pictures that we saw, resembles the lunar surface.

Sep 13: Daydreams Day Party

Daydreams, Melbourne’s loosest dance floor, is coming to Tank Shanghai for a massive day party that lasts all the way into the night. Music on the evening will come from Australian Daydreams DJs Mark Free and Maxwell S with local support from China Social Club, Mau Mau, Endy and E L F. In conjunction with Tank Art Festival, this day party features a warehouse with a booming sound system from DAS Audio, a glorious rooftop overlooking the river, scary mannequin heads, pizza from Homeslice, drinks from Boxing Cat, Absolut, Ballantines, loving support from Skullcandy and a wacky inflatable arm man all in a massive old oil tank.

Sep 13-14: Kamasi Washington

Blue Note Shanghai are wasting no time getting into the swing of things. This weekend they invite the amazing Kamasi Washington and his band for two evenings. Washington rocketed to stardom after the release of his 2015 debut album The Epic. He has followed up on the success of that record with another studio album, Heaven and Earth, as well as two EPs, all on acclaimed lable Young Turks.

Sep 13-15: JZ Festival

China’s biggest jazz and blues festival is back, celebrating their 15th anniversary. This year’s fest will be held from September 13-15 at the Maxus Datong Music Valley, just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival. The 15th annual festival boasts a lineup of 75 bands including Lalah Hathaway, Jacob Collier, the Earth Wind & Fire Experience (featuring the Al McKay All Stars), Marcus Miller, Jaga Jazzist, Tia Ray, Cui Jian, Li Quan, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Viento Terral with Andy Hunter, just to name a few. Musicians and bands from far and wide are bringing the sounds of jazz, blues, funk, Latin, fusion and more to JZ’s stages.

Sep 13-15: 1862 Live

1862 Theater is bringing three excellent acts to Shanghai in September for one weekend of world music. French act Deep Forest, Spanish string musician Ana Alcaide and Tibet singer Yunggiema will take to the stage for one evening each from September 13-15, and you can now buy your tickets for that over on thMart.

Sep 14: Walk: Old Hongkou

Old Hongkou was a wild tapestry of contrasts, and the site of some of Shanghai’s defining historical moments. Yet it remains little known and explored – and it’s being flattened at a rapid rate. Join Historic Shanghai for Victorian architecture, missionaries, revolutionaries, red light districts, Japanese Buddhist temples, Shanghai lane neighborhoods, American churches and some of the International Settlement’s most impressive urban planning feats – before these, too, vanish.
